ROLE SUMMARY
Pfizer Worldwide Business Development is seeking a Director, Medicinal Sciences R&D Business Development (BD) Lead to join a dynamic and purpose-driven team. The scope of the role will mainly support the Medicinal Sciences and Partner Lines and provide transaction support for asset and platform partnering activities. Occasionally, subject to workload sharing, the role will also support transactions outside of Medicinal Sciences.
The Director role is a high-profile position within the organization, and the ideal candidate will bring a strong background participating and leading certain aspects of biopharmaceutical business development deal-making.
At Pfizer, we apply science and our global resources to bring therapies to people that extend and significantly improve their lives. We strive to set the standard for quality, safety, and value in the discovery, development, and manufacture of health care products. Every day, Pfizer colleagues work across developed and emerging markets to advance wellness, prevention, treatments, and cures that challenge the most feared diseases of our time. Consistent with our responsibility as one of the world's premier innovative biopharmaceutical companies, we collaborate with health care providers, governments, and local communities to support and expand access to reliable, affordable health care around the world. For more than 150 years, Pfizer has worked to make a difference for all who rely on us.
Business Development
Pfizer’s mission is developing breakthrough medicines and bringing them to patients. Our strategy to execute on this mission depends on gathering the best ideas and using the sharpest science that the broader healthcare ecosystem can generate. Our past success has regularly been in partnership with others, and Pfizer is continuing to prioritize business development as a core enabler of our strategy.
There is vast science happening beyond our walls, and collaboration is a key driver of innovation at Pfizer. We collaborate to accelerate the pace at which good scientific ideas can become promising therapies, building on or complementing our own in-house knowledge. There is a rich and highly networked health ecosystem where multiple organizations are focused on one goal: discover new therapies for patients, as fast as we can.
In Worldwide Research, Development and Medical (WRDM), we apply a broad portfolio of platform technologies, modalities, and capabilities to the discovery, research, and early development of potential new therapeutics in areas of unmet medical need. Partnerships are critical to innovation within the biopharmaceutical industry, and enable us to work together to advance promising science and bring it closer to patients. As we work on some of the most serious and complex medical challenges, we collaborate closely and creatively with our partners to accelerate and deliver innovation.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director, Medicinal Sciences Business Development will be responsible for building external relationships with potential partners and executing preclinical transactions for Pfizer. Transactional responsibilities include drafting and negotiating a high volume of research and collaboration agreements with academic partners, and leading and supporting transactions with biotech partners.
The individual in this role will understand the Medicinal Sciences and other Partner Line's priorities, aligning with category strategy and WRDM leadership, and s/he will partner closely with Pfizer colleagues responsible for deal sourcing activities and for later stage transactions in these areas. When pre-clinical transaction opportunities are identified, the ideal individual will be able to independently draft, negotiate and execute academic research, collaboration, and licensing agreements, partnering closely with legal and Research Unit colleagues. On more complex transactions, the individual will have the opportunity to lead or will partner closely with more experienced colleagues on the WRD BD team.
The ideal candidate has direct experience participating in, leading and executing pre-clinical or early-stage business development transactions. He or she will bring experience not only leading negotiations, but also building relationships with current and potential partners, pressure testing the business case for deals, driving to consensus on go/no-go decisions, bringing deal teams together and aligning them on a common goal, making appropriate risk/benefit trade-offs, and executing from first partner interaction to deal closing and beyond.
The incumbent will focus on preclinical asset, platform, drug discovery, and academic opportunities in Medicinal Sciences and, as needed, in other therapeutic areas, and will play a central role in strategic discussions on deal prioritization. In this complex role, the right individual will be agile and comfortable working in a matrixed environment and capable to manage multiple demands and needs of competing business challenges.

  • Partner with the relevant Chief Scientific Officers and Partner Line leaders to understand the research unit strategies and priorities; ensure communication with and feedback from category leaders; provide input from the external landscape, and establish clear goals and priorities for preclinical BD opportunities
  • Manage and streamline deal governance process and ensure compliance with corporate procedure; establish process and timelines to manage execution of transactions in a timely manner
  • Partner closely with Emerging Science & Innovation colleagues to oversee cross-functional due diligence teams, monitor external opportunities that are aligned with business priorities, and ensure new data is reviewed as it becomes available
  • Knowledgeably represent Pfizer in discussions with current and potential partners or other external audiences
  • Build and manage collaborative relationships across the Pfizer organization and create internal alignment
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • The ideal candidate will have an advanced Medical or Scientific Degree (MD or PhD) in a scientific discipline, legal degree (JD) and/or business degree (MBA). A bachelor’s degree required, with a preference for a bachelor’s in biology, chemistry, or a related discipline.
